Tallinn is a city on the north coast of Estonia on the Kopli and Tallinn bays. Tallinn is the capital of the Republic of Estonia and the administrative centre of Harju county. 2006. As of 1 July Tallinn had 400,445 registered inhabitants. Tallinn has an area of 156,3 km².

Within city limits are two lakes, Ülemiste and Harku, and the island of Aegna. Estonia's capital boasts a well-preserved mediaeval city centre. A little under one-third of the population lives in Tallinn. A total of 67% of the population is urban. Besides the capital, the next-biggest cities are the university town of Tartu, the industrial border town of Narva and the “summer capital” Pärnu, which in good weather can be almost Mediterranean in quality.

The closest major city lies directly across the Gulf of Finland -- Helsinki (85 km) – and other cities about a day’s journey away include Riga (307 km), Stockholm (405 km) and Sankt-Peterburg (395 km).
